Full disclosure time: Barok's canon deals with subjects of period-appropriate racism and sexism. That would be one thing. However, and there's no getting around this, Barok is especially heinously racist even compared to other characters in the same setting and in particular carries a deep hatred of all Japanese people, and is prejudiced in ways including general contempt toward the country and distrust of Japanese individuals.

While certain events toward the end of the series turn many of Barok's assumptions on their head, canon does not explore Barok's mentality afterwards and it is perhaps a bit of an overstatement to say that he ever explicitly "gets better".
